Oscar de la Renta Runway Accessories

All Photos by Matteo Volta.  Courtesy of elle.com
It's not secret that I have an affinity for Oscar de la Renta and everything he does.  I am particularly interested by his accessories from his Spring 2013 collection.  The large, statement floral pieces remind me of decorations that I would find in an antique store, and this isn't a bad thing.  They are elegant, but quirky.  That seems to be the theme and motif that De la Renta created this season.  He contradicts himself with understated statements.  The cutouts are a supreme example of this.  In the nude, metallic heel shoe, he uses the cutouts as extreme subtlety.  In the white strappy, cuffed heel, the cutouts are in-your-face.

I smile when I look at images from De la Renta's shows.  But, my bias fortunately doesn't affect my ability to determine good style and taste.

Girly Annie

My favorite little fashion model, Annie, is studying in Scotland for the semester (I'm withholding the waterworks).  While over in the U.K, Annie purchased a nice little high-low skirt.  It was navy and white with vertical stripes.  She was having trouble styling it, so I thought I would lend a hand.  Here are three outfit ideas for Annie that will not only keep her looking good, but also keep her little self from not freezing.

Do you have a particular tricky item of clothing?  If you need help, I would be more than happy to help.  Send me an email or just comment below.

Like a Rolling Stone

Rock n' Rolling Stone

I have been finding fashion inspiration from all kinds of sources recently.  My favorite has been music.  I have been a Bob Dylan fan since freshman year of high school.  I've seen him live in concert twice, own countless books about him, and have watched Don't Look Back and No Direction Home dozens of times.  Every time that I see pictures or videos of Dylan, I also think to myself, "Why aren't people documenting his fashion choices as diligently as they are his music choices?"  In my opinion, his choice of music style is undeniably linked to his fashion style.  When he was starting in Greenwich Village in the early 60s, he adopted not only Woody Guthrie's music, but also his sense of style.  He wore a workman's closet in order to identify himself as a folk singer strongly rooted in a voice for the every man.  As he developed artistically, his clothes became more outlandish and reflective of his ventures in London with the Beatles.  He began wearing (my favorite) polka dot shirts and pointed-toe heeled boots.  His jeans with skinny and often with stripes.  Dylan dressed like the ultimate rock god.  Take note.

Paris Haute Couture

Melanie Galea from Lifestyle Mirror
These pictures are all from Parisian haute couture street style.  Personally, I love the fur skirt and find it to be so elegant.  I think of Grace Kelly for some reason, even though I'm sure she didn't own a fur skirt.  The mix of simplicity with outlandish textures and colors is really phenomenal.  Such grace and beauty from such lovely places.

Found Music: The Books

I found this song/band a while back when I was listening to NPR's "On the Media" for class.  It was one of the music interludes on the show.  I thought that it would be an interesting song to share.  I'm thinking about choreographing a dance to it someday.  What do you think?

Emerald City

Emerald City

I know I'm a little late on this, but who else is excited about Pantone's color being emerald?  It's not exactly news, but I'm sure trying to incorporate little pops of emerald anywhere I can.  How about you?

Fawn

Fawn

As a dance major, I am always inspired by pieces of choreography that I watch.  One of the most inspiring and captivating for me was "The Afternoon of the Fawn" originally choreographed and starring the great Vaslav Nijinsky.  The piece, however controversial and risque, is really quite beautiful in the imagery and shapes that it possesses.  The story is about a group of Grecian or Egyptian women that are strolling along and they run into a fawn.  While the other women more or less scatter, one stays behind and "befriends" the fawn.  A relationship is more or less formed between the woman and the fawn and he falls in love with her.  She leaves behind a scarf and he keeps it to remember her by.  If you have a general interest in early modern dance or time during Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, this piece is a good watch.

The fashion in this piece is also something to be noted.  I love the beauty of the woman's costume versus the pure nature and animalism of the fawn.  I find so much fashion inspiration from this choreographic work!
